Homilies By Email began in 1999 and has evolved to include many new resources. Bass M. Mitchell, a United Methodist elder in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church, is the founder and writer of HBEM.
Among Bass's published writings are two books, In Every Blade of Rustling Grass and God Sightings, and a Lenten study guide, Risen to Redeem, published by Abingdon Press/Cokesbury. Bass co-authored Bit Players in the Big Play published by CSS Publishing Company. He has been published in The Upper Room, The Upper Room Discipline, and has written articles and curricula for the United Methodist Publishing House.
Bass grew up in Bridgeton, North Carolina and is married to Debbie Rackley of Nash County, North Carolina. They have two young adult children, Michael and Meredith, a daughter-in-law, Loren, who is a Presbyterian minister, a son-in-law, Nick, who is a writer, and a grandson. Bass currently serves Sudley United Methodist Church in Northern Virginia.
